Planning and Environmental Protection
The Planning and Environmental Protection Department is committed to promoting sustainable development and ensuring the responsible use of land within our community. We provide comprehensive analysis, education, and guidance on various critical areas, including zoning, land use regulation, sustainable practices, environmental impact assessments, and environmental quality issues.
Key Responsibilities:
Zoning and Land Use Regulation:
The Department analyzes and guides the application of zoning laws and land use regulations, ensuring they align with community goals.
Oversight and Support:
The Department oversees the Board of Zoning Appeals and the Historic Landmark Preservation Commission. We analyze and prepare applications for review by the boards. We also provide essential support to the Town Board in evaluating land use applications.
Regional Collaboration:
Our team represents the Town in various local and regional committees, commissions, and working groups, including the Manhasset Bay and Hempstead Harbor Protection Committees. This collaboration helps to align our planning efforts with broader regional initiatives.
Technical Reviews:
We conduct detailed technical reviews of all major commercial, multi-family, and institutional development proposals, ensuring compliance with local regulations and environmental standards.
Project Implementation:
The Department actively participates in the implementation of Economic Development initiatives, transportation, environmental, and other capital projects, contributing to the enhancement of community infrastructure and environmental sustainability.
Grant Management:
The Department manages state grants for Planning, environmental and sustainability projects and initiatives.
Zoning Map Maintenance:
In accordance with Town Code, we maintain and regularly update the Zoning Map for the Town.
