About Us

The mission of the Town of North Hempstead’s Department of Solid Waste Management is to maximize reuse and recycling and minimize the amount of waste going to landfills and incinerators. This is accomplished primarily through the development and promotion of residential and commercial waste reduction and recycling programs.  However, to fully accomplish our mission, the Department of Solid Waste Management requires the full cooperation and participation of all Town of North Hempstead residents.

The Department of Solid Waste Management’s role in refuse and recycling collections:

The composition of local government on Long Island is quite complicated and challenging to fully comprehend for anyone residing in the Town of North Hempstead and unfamiliar with the various administrative divisions or jurisdictional layers that comprise the Town of North Hempstead as a whole.   Therefore, what follows is a brief primer for those unfamiliar with the many layers of local government one may encounter when attempting to determine responsibility related to one’s refuse or recycling services.

For the most part, refuse and recycling services within the Town of North Hempstead are privatized.  Meaning the services have been solicited by local government from private companies that specialize in providing collection services.  There are some exceptions to this general rule within some of the individual incorporated villages, where village employees may instead perform the same collection functions. The Department of Solid Waste Management, as a division of the Town of North Hempstead’s government, is responsible for soliciting and managing refuse and recycling services on behalf of the five Town of North Hempstead Garbage Districts.

If you do not reside within one of the Town of North Hempstead Department of Solid Waste Management administered garbage districts, then you either live in one of the 31 incorporated villages that are within the borders of the Town of North Hempstead, or you live in an unincorporated village that sometime in the past chose to administer its own refuse and recycling collections.  Residents residing within one of those districts or villages should contact the district or village directly to obtain information regarding the collection schedule for both refuse and recycling. To find the appropriate contact information for your district or village not participating in the Town of North Hempstead Department of Solid Waste Management administered districts, please click on the link that follows: Garbage Districts.
