- North Hempstead residents regardless of garbage district have an obligation under New York State and local law to recycle. In compliance with the state and local mandate each district operates a recycling program. Under the recycling programs certain post-consumer items are designated for source separation by residents and separate set-out for collection. There is no Single Stream Recycling (the commingling of recyclables in the same truck) allowed in the Town of North Hempstead.
- Each recycling program includes glass bottles and jars, metal cans, aluminum foil and wrap, plastics #1 and #2 and all clean paper (including newspaper, magazines, paper & hard cover books, phonebooks, junk mail, grey cardboard (shirt cardboard) and corrugated cardboard). The collection schedules vary among communities in accordance with individual garbage districts.
- Residents in Town of North Hempstead Garbage Districts are required to supply their own recycling buckets for recycling set out. The Town provides decals for all Town of North Hempstead residents for labeling their recycling buckets. Call 311 to order your decals. It is important to know your garbage district, what the set out requirements in your district are and what carter is responsible for picking up your particular neighborhood, when trying to obtain information.
