The Port Washington Parking District will be open on the first Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.


    The Port Washington Parking District will be open on the first Wednesday of every month from 6 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

    General

    1. What is the Residential Preferential Program?

    The RPP program is intended to preserve the integrity of the seven Parking District commuter parking lots. The program is designed to preferential use of the seven off-street commuter parking to residents of the Parking District and to allow visitor use after the restricted hours. Commuter parking lots are restricted for only District residents who have permits from 5am to 3pm Monday through Friday.

    2. How do I request my permit?

    Permits are  available online. Stickers and vouchers will no longer be given. Instead the vehicle license plate will be used as the commuter’s unique identifier. To apply, please visit  .”

    3. I don’t have a computer or scanner at home. How can apply?

    District staff will be available to assist you with your online user profile during the hours of 6 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. Monday through Friday. We are located at 15 Vanderventer Avenue, Port Washington, NY.

    4. Will I need a permit to park in the Commuter and Shopper District lots all the time?


    No. You will be able to park without a permit from 3pm to 3am, Monday through Friday. Weekends are also not restricted, but for Lot 7 on Saturday. Please read posted signs at each parking lot before parking.

    5. Will I need a permit to park in Lot 11, the merchant only parking lot?

    Yes, only merchants with valid permits can park in Lot 11. Shopper and commuter are not available in Lot 11. Restrictions are in placed around the clock.

    6. What do I do if the meter is not working?

    If the meter is not working, please call 311 and provide the meter number to the call taker. The motorist may park in the broken meter space no longer than the permitted time set duration.

    7. What do I do if I received a parking ticket?

    Parking tickets are issued by the Town of North Hempstead or the Port Washington Police Department. The Parking District has no jurisdiction to adjudicate or collect parking tickets. Please follow the directions on the reverse side of the ticket.

    The Parking District is governed by the North Hempstead Town Board. The District employees 4 full-time staffers and 2 part-timers who operate and maintain 12 surface lots, 544 on-street meters and 6 multi-space meters.

    8. Which holidays are parking restrictions not in effect?


    New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday, Lincoln's Birthday, Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day,  Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

    9. Are there commuting alternatives?

    Yes, bike lockers are now available.   Individual bicycle lockers are located near the train station, in Lot 12.  Lockers will be assigned on a first come, first served basis. Click here for the application.

    The lockers are durable and totally enclose the bicycle, protecting it from rain and snow.  There is also room for your helmet, riding shoes, and other accessories.  When you close the door, the lock recesses into the handle, making the locker very safe and secure, and protecting your bicycle from the elements.

    Residents

    1. I want to park in the Parking District commuter lot. What do I need to know?

    Three proofs of residency are required when applying for a permit.

    Documentation Required:

    - Current Driver's License
    - Vehicle Registration/Part B only, not windshield half

    - Two Current Utility Bills(i.e.: Cable, PSEG; National Grid, PW Water District).

     ALL DOCUMENTS MUST HAVE SAME NAME AND ADDRESS

    Notarized letter may be requested

    2. How do I request my permit?

    Employee / Employers


    1. I work in Port Washington and park on the street. What do I need to know?

    Most on-street meters are two hours. Illegal to park longer than meter limit.

    2. Are there any parking lots for merchants and employees?


    Yes. Lot 11 is only for merchant and employee parking. Permits are $750 per year and each parking space may be share permits with two vehicles for an additional $15 fee.

    Visitor

    1. I am planning to visit Port Washington on a weekday. Where can I park?

    There are a number of parking options in Port Washington for visitors, including the following:

    • Park off-street District lots, meters are .25 cents per hour and range from 2 to 8 hours.  Meters are in effect from Monday - Friday, 9 am - 6 pm.  Click here for a map of parking lots.
    • Park on-street meter 0.25 per ½ hour for up to 2 hours for most meters.  Meters are in effect from Monday - Saturday, 9 am - 6 pm.

    2. What type of payment do I need for a meter?

    All on-street meters accept only quarters. Shortly, we will be implementing a pilot pay by phone solution to allow motorists to call or use their smart phone to pay for parking. All off-street multi-space meters accept quarters and credit cards. In addition to the meters, pay by phone is accepted in Lot 4 through Pango.com.
