Department of Public Works - Highway Department

The Highway Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of 300 miles of Town roadways, including pavement and drainage maintenance, street sweeping, street sign installation and maintenance, street trees, snow removal, ice and flood control.

The Superintendent issues road opening permits for anyone (homeowners and/or contractors) planning to perform work within the Town's right-of-way.

Remember that the Town roadways are located in the unincorporated areas only, outside Village limit lines. If you live in one of the 31 Villages within the Town of North Hempstead please contact your local village hall. For information on County and State roadways please contact the appropriate agency.

Signals

Traffic Signal malfunctions. The Town does not maintain traffic signals.
If the signal housing is green in color it is maintained by New York State, please call (631) 724-4040. If the signal housing is yellow in color is it maintained by Nassau County, please call (516) 572 0465.
